The Fundamental Science of Geo-Science:Making Knowledge from Data
Scientific remote sensing involves reasoning the path between factual evidence (consisting to large extent on data from remote sensors) and recognition of surface phenomenon.
Hypotheses regarding the type or identity of a surface object are both put forward and tested with regard to three theories:
- Radiation theory relating a set of physical indicators (i.e., multispectral signals) to chemical biological and physical object properties (i.e., mineralogy, temperature, moisture content).
- Spatial / location theory relating to thematic affinity due to adjacency (1st Toblers' Law), Spatial Autocorrelation and Spatio-Temporal Patterns.
- Information theory involved with inference procedures applied with spectral, spatial and temporal indicators.
