"Perhaps the composition and layout of surfaces constitute what they afford. If so, to perceive them is to perceive what they afford" (J.J. Gibson, 1979, p 127) 

  
In other words : to perceive pattern is to perceive what it affords and to perceive what it affords is to perceive its function, its cause and its potential (implicit) change.  Embedded affinity may exist in the human visual perception between environmental functions  and  patterns 'remnants' of ancient times  where  

 
Within Earth Science perspective, relationships between patterns and processes have had been heavily discussed   in the context of explaining patterns observed   in nature and predicting their future evolution.
These relationships are highly relevant in addressing questions concerning Ecosystems' stability under Global Warming and Desertification.
